SYDNEY, April 10 AAP - A timeline of Peter Ryan's career with the NSW Police Service:

June 3, 1996 - Peter Ryan, the-then national director of the Police Training Collegein England, touted as the frontrunner for the job of NSW Police Commissioner.

June 11, 1996 - Ryan replaces Tony Lauer as NSW Commissioner.

August 27, 1996 - Ryan arrives in Sydney to take up his appointment.

August 30, 1996 - Ryan sworn in as commissioner at a ceremony at Parliament House.

He immediately outlined his planned reforms of the force, including power to local police,a restructured management, targeting corruption, and integrity in policing.

October 22, 1996 - Ryan says he plans to stay in Australia and eventually become a citizen.

November 12, 1996 - Ryan given unprecedented powers to fight corruption including theability to sack police who have lost his confidence and the right to conduct covert "integritytests" on officers suspected of being corrupt.

November 19, 1996 - Ryan takes the witness stand at the Wood Royal Commission, unveilingwhat he termed the most extensive overhaul of the police service in its 134-year history.

January 29, 1997 - Ryan takes the axe to senior management, slashing about a dozenofficers including Geoff Schuberg who would return on December 6, 2002 as member of anadvisory board to Police Minister Michael Costa.

February 9, 1998 - Ryan accuses senior officers of "white-anting" him by leaking informationin a long-running campaign to damage his standing.

September 22, 1998 - A rift between Ryan and his deputy Jeff Jarratt deepens with thecommissioner angrily rejecting criticism from Jarratt over his management style as extraordinaryand offensive.

February 14, 1999 - Ryan's contract extended until 2004.

July 20, 1999 - Ryan confirms he's on a short list to head up Scotland Yard. A daylater he withdrew his candidacy.

July 26, 2001 - Ryan rejects calls for his resignation over the Cabramatta crisis inwhich police whistleblower Tim Priest accused senior officers of refusing to acknowledgereports of gang warfare brewing in the suburb.

August 26, 2001 - Ryan says he's unlikely to reapply for the state's top police jobwhen his contract runs out, and will probably return home to England.

September 5, 2001 - Deputy Commissioner Jeff Jarratt sacked by Ryan over his performance.

November 21, 2001 - Former union boss Michael Costa appointed NSW Police Minister,pledging support for Ryan.

February 7, 2002 - Premier Bob Carr says he "imagined" Ryan would be reappointed commissionerat the end of his contract.

March 4, 2002 - Ryan gives evidence at Police Integrity Commission hearings into policereforms and the controversy surrounding the establishment and subsequent axing of theCrime Management Support Unit.

April 10, 2002 - Ryan resigns, with Premier Bob Carr agreeing to terminate his contracton April 17.
