Fed: Democrats call for return of working credits scheme

The Australian Democrats have called for the return of the working credits scheme toassist 100,000 school leavers who enter the workforce next month.

Democrats employment spokesman JOHN CHERRY says working credits allowed the unemployedto keep more of their earnings from part-time or casual jobs.

Senator CHERRY says the scheme was attached to a welfare reform bill, but failed topass the Senate earlier this month because the government wouldn't separate it from othermeasures directed at mature aged workers and sole parent families.

He says if an unemployed person takes up a casual or part-time job, they stand to loseup to 88 per cent of their earnings in tax and reduced social security payments, leavingthem financially worse off than if they stayed unemployed.

Senator CHERRY says the working credits scheme allows an unemployed person to earnup to $1,000 before social security payments are reduced and this will increase the attractivenessof casual and part-time work.
