Fed: Territory s mandatory sentancing laws to go UN court
DARWIN, Feb 3 AAP - A legal service is planning to challenge the Northern Territory's
mandatory sentencing laws in an international court claiming they breach United Nations
conventions on human rights.
The North Australian Aboriginal Legal Aid Service (NAALAS) has received permission
from a number of people subject to mandatory sentencing to take the case to the international
arena.
Courts in the Northern Territory have been obliged since 1997 to sentence to jail terms
adults convicted of most property offences.
