FED: National road toll stands at 58

SYDNEY, Dec 29 AAP - Australian roads have remained toll-free today with no new fatal
accidents recorded.

Since December 18, 58 lives have been lost on the nation's roads.

But New South Wales retains the country's worst record for the holiday period with 20
deaths on the state's roads.

The latest death involved a nine-year-old girl who died from head injuries suffered in a
crash that killed her seven-year-old sister on the Oxley Highway in northern NSW yesterday.

And in South Australia a 40-year-old Sydney woman died when the car she was travelling in
crashed into a tree in SA's Riverland yesterday afternoon.

Her death took the South Australian road toll to five.

Victoria has had 12 deaths, Queensland eight and Western Australia six.

Tasmania has recorded five deaths for the holiday period and the ACT two.

Only the Northern Territory remains fatality-free.

(EDS: AAP's national road toll figures are for the period 0001 AEDT December 18 to midnight
January 3 AEDT. Some states and territories have different periods.)
