Pets landing bigger hits than singers; Internet.(News)

By RUKI SAYID, Consumer Editor One in 10 pets are stars of social networking sites - and some are more popular than pop singers and television stars.

Maru the tabby cat, from Japan, has notched up more than six million hits on YouTube - 60% more than singer Adele, who has 2.5 million views.

Sockington the cat, from Boston, US, has 1.5 million Twitter fans, while Lord Sugar of The Apprentice has 706,783. And Boo the dog has 1.3million Facebook friends, which is around 100,000 more than Katie Price.

Half of UK owners post pictures of their animals online and one in 10 pets have their own accounts, a study by insurance group Petplan found.

Social media specialist Stephen Davies said: "As networking gets bigger in our lives, it's only natural our pets become part of it. There is an insatiable pet demand online."
